Off-site SEO

Off-site SEO is everything that occurs on the world wide web that links back to your site (backlinks).

The way search engines see it is, if other sites are talking about you and linking to you, then your site must have something worth recommending. The more links you have the greater trust the search engines credit you with.

That might sound straightforward, but it isn’t. If the sites that link to you aren’t recognised as trustworthy by the search engines, then the links going to you can count off-site SEOagainst you.

A measure of how well your site is ranked is known as Domain Authority. A large part of what makes up a websites Domain Authority is the amount and quality of the sites that link to it.

A site with a high Domain Authority will be one that has lots of links from trustworthy sites.

That might sound straightforward, but it isn’t. If the sites that link to you aren’t recognised as trustworthy by the search engines, then the links going to you can count against you.

There are several ways in which you can proactively gain backlinks:

  • Article submissions – write interesting and unique articles about your industry and get them submitted on trusted sites such as GoArticles.com
  • Online Directories – submit your sites to reputable relevant online directories
  • Blog – add a blog to your site and share its content on social media networks. If the blog is interesting enough, this can result in others sharing your links and even adding them to their websites.
  • Social Media – integrating Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other social networks into your site will encourage participation from visitors to your site. It will also give you another avenue for your marketing activities.
  • Forums – participation in forum discussions can gain you backlinks
  • Comments – much like forums, commenting on others content can be equally effective
  • Guest posting on mainstream blogs – not easy to be accepted as a guest blogger but worthwhile if you are.
  • Press releases – interesting press releases can be picked up by some very highly ranked websites giving you invaluable backlinks. If you got some interesting news, release it.

By far the best way to get backlinks is to have an interesting, up to date, informative website that your visitors will want to talk about, recommend, share and link to.
